The Loch Ness Monster is Back?

Gordon Holmes' new Loch Ness footage

An amateur scientist has captured what Loch Ness Monster watchers say is among the finest footage ever taken of the elusive mythical creature reputed to swim beneath the waters of Scotland's most mysterious lake.

"I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this jet black thing, about 45-feet (15 meters) long, moving fairly fast in the water," said Gordon Holmes, the 55-year-old a lab technician from Shipley, Yorkshire, who took the video this past Saturday.

He said it moved at about 6 mph (10 kph) and kept a fairly straight course.

"My initial thought is it could be a very big eel, they have serpent-like features and they may explain all the sightings in Loch Ness over the years."

Holmes' footage is of such good quality that even the normally reticent BBC Scotland aired the video on its main news program on Tuesday.

Father: Lindsay Lohan Addicted to Powerful Painkiller & Need to Get into God!

Drunken Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan suffers from multiple addictions to alcohol and drugs, including the powerful painkiller OxyContin, the 20-year-old actress' estranged father told E! Online on Wednesday.

"I spoke to the people treating Lindsay, because I wanted to make sure she was getting the right care," said Michael Lohan. "And I'm satisfied they are doing the right thing for her, helping her detox from the painkillers and things. That's a very important step."

Old Lohan also wanted to make sure Lindsay would be getting religious counseling.

"And I learned they use the 12-step program," Michael said, "which includes a lot of lessons based on God's teachings, so I was satisfied with that. First she needs to get clean, then she needs to let God into her life."

Weird Belgian Playground Signboard

Kevin Cazabon submitted this weird playground signboard to Alex Papadimoulis of Worse Than Failure with the narration reading:

"Having moved overseas to Belgium a few years ago, from time to time I'm reminded that good, effective icon design is an artform best left to the true professionals. This is especially true when you consider that your software may be used across the world, and what may seem like common sense to you may befuddle a Belgian... or the other way around.

"Although the below image is not a computer icon, I think it illustrates the point rather clearly. Either I missed out on a lot as a kid, or the playgrounds here in Belgium are a LOT more fun than the ones back home. This is a picture that I took personally of an actual playground sign in a small suburb outside of Brussels.

Dying Diana Picture to Be Aired on Britain's Channel Four

the crumpled wreck of the Mercedez-Benz in which Princess Diana died

Princes William and Harry are said to be "devastated" at a decision by Britain's Channel Four to show a picture of their dying mother.

The station will screen it as part of a documentary, Diana: The Witnesses in the Tunnel, which will air in Britain on Wednesday, June 6, ahead of the 10th anniversary of the Princess's death.

The picture shows Diana slumped in the back of a black Mercedes following the tragic car accident in a French underpass. It shows a doctor attempting to place an oxygen mask over her face.

The Princes attacked the publication of the photograph in Italian magazine Chi last year, saying they were "deeply saddened that such a low has been reached".

They begged other media outlets not to follow suit.

Clarence House has said in a statement: "They have made their position on this very clear. They want their mother to be allowed to rest in peace."

Despite this, Channel Four has decided to press ahead with the use of theDiana's Trust Tracker bike photograph, claiming it is important evidence as to whether the paparazzi played a role in the Princess's death. Source: SMH

At the same time, someone also dugg the money from the death of Prince Diana by selling the Trust Tracker bike which was used by the Princess of Wales when she lived in Althorp in the 1970s.

Oscar-winner Actress Jane Fonda Honoured by Cannes

Jane Fonda, Anne Consigny

The 60th Cannes film festival, which ended on Sunday, May 28, awarded a Palme d'Or for lifetime achievement to veteran US actress and activist Jane Fonda over the weekend.

The exceptional Golden Palm prize, awarded by festival chief Gilles Jacob, had only been awarded three times before since 1946, to French directors Alain Resnais and Gerard Oury and the French actress Jeanne Moreau.

Jacob presented the surprise honour at a dinner after a screening of Sidney Lumet's classic 12 Angry Men as a tribute to her late father Henry, who died in 1982.

"I never imagined that the Cannes film festival would honour a person who was spied on and tracked by the FBI, a person who has a 20 000-page file," Jacob noted with a touch of irony, referring to her campaign against the Vietnam war, and later the US invasion of Iraq.

But she possibably felt somewhat embarrassed during the closing ceremony when she was seen wearing the exact same dressing (picture above)as the one that Anne Consigny wore some days earlier in the festival. links: 24.com | Qianlong

5,000 Rare Animals Found Floating Off the Coast of Cina

bear paw

Endangered, hunted, smuggled and now abandoned, 5,000 of the world's rarest animals have been found drifting in a deserted boat near the coast of China.

The pangolins, Asian giant turtles and lizards were crushed inside crates on a rickety wooden vessel that had lost engine power off Qingzhou island in the southern province of Guangdong. Most were alive, though the cargo also contained 21 bear paws [left pic)]wrapped in newspaper.

According to conservation groups, the haul was discovered on one of the world's most lucrative and destructive smuggling routes: from the threatened jungles of south-east Asia to the restaurant tables of southern China.

The animals were found when local fishermen noticed a strange smell emanating from the vessel, which did not have any registration plates, on Tuesday, the Guangzhou Daily reported.

When coastguard officials boarded the 25-metre craft, it was reportedly deserted and stripped of identification papers. They found more than 200 crates full of animals, many so dehydrated in the tropical sun that they were close to death.

The animals - which weighed 13 tonnes - were taken to port, doused with water and sent to an animal welfare centre. "We have received some animals," said an office worker at the Guangdong Wild Animal Protection Centre. "We are waiting to hear from the authorities what we should do with them."

According to the local media, the cargo included 31 pangolins, 44 leatherback turtles, 2,720 monitor lizards, 1,130 Brazilian turtles as well as the bear paws. Photographs showed other animals, including an Asian giant turtle.

All of these south-east Asian species are critically endangered, banned from international trade and yet openly sold in restaurants and markets in China's southern province of Guangdong, which is famous for its exotic cuisine.

43 different kinds of commodities are available in the store, including "No Junk Mail" and "Renewable Energy". Some were specially engineered for the Chinese market, such as "Serve the People". Prices range from 10 to 100 yuan, or around $1.2 to 12 US dollars.

The first consumers came just five minutes after the store opened. One female, white-collar worker bought two bottles of "Pause" and one bottle of "8-Hours Sleep", costing 60 yuan, or about $7.5 US dollars.

Danish artist Mads Hagstrom, the designer of the commodities, said his creations aim to inspire consumers to think, live and consume more holistically.

Rare Glass Lizard Found in a Chinese Park

Chinese glass lizardOn May 20, staffs of Zhuhai Park in Jiangsu Province's Yixing City found a rare animal which resembes a cross between rice field eel and snake besides a hill road in the park. It measured 40 cm long and weighted at 95 gram. Later the snake-like animal was determined to be rare Chinese glass lizard by experts from the School of Biological Sciences in Nanjing Normal University, a species on the Protected Endangered Chinese Wildlife Animal List. Now the reptile has been released to the bamboo forest of Zhuhai Park. link

P.s. Glass Lizard in Wikipedia:

The Glass Lizards or glass snakes, genus Ophisaurus, are a group of reptiles that resemble snakes, but are actually lizards. Although most species have no legs, their head shape and the fact that they have movable eyelids and external ear openings make it obvious that they are lizards. These animals are also known as Glass Snakes or Jointed Snakes. They reach lengths of up to 4 ft, but approximately two-thirds of this is the tail. Glass lizards feed mainly on insects.

Their common name comes from the fact that they are easily broken: like many lizards, they have the ability to deter predation by dropping off part of the tail which can break into several pieces, like glass. The tail remains mobile, while the lizard becomes motionless, distracting the predator, and allowing eventual escape. This serious loss of body mass requires a considerable effort to replace, and the new tail is usually smaller in size than the original.

Henan Farmer Jailed for Trading in Protected Swans

A central China farmer has been jailed for 13 years after being convicted on two charges of illegally purchasing and selling state-protected swans and their meat.

Zhang Yuelin, 48, from Henan Province, was also fined 50,000 yuan ($6,500).

The court heard that in October and November last year, Zhang repeatedly went to Puzhou Township in north China's Shanxi Province and bought 38 dead swans and one kilogram of swan down from Zhao Naishun, a resident of Puzhou, and another fisherman who was identified only by the surname Chen.

On his return, Zhang plucked the dead swans and hid them in the backyard of his house. He later sold 37 of the carcases, receiving 3,000 yuan.

The court concluded Zhang, who knew swans were listed for state protection, broke the law by illegally purchasing and selling more than 10 of the birds.

Villagers Taking Fertility Drugs to Beat One-child Policy in China

Vallegers Taking Fertility Drugs to Beat One-child Policy in ChinaFrom BBC

Jiao Na and her husband Niu Jian-fang beat China's one-child policy by having quintuplets.

"What's your secret?" I ask them.

Niu Jian Fang stares ahead. Jiao Na laughs nervously.

"Difficult to say," she answers.

No-one here in Buffalo village [of Henan Province] wants to say it openly, but privately families admit they use fertility drugs [e.g. clomifene citrate capsules] to get round the one-child limit.

One woman says her parents-in-law put the drugs into her food to make sure she would conceive twins.Clomifene Citrate Capsules

Because of the fertility drugs, this village has more twins on one single street than you would expect to find in the entire village.

Just down the road from the quintuplets' house, there is Lou Yuan Mei and her two-year-old twins, Lin Kai and Lin Da, dressed in identical orange jumpsuits.

A few doors down, Wu Xiaofang is happy to pick up and show off her baby twins, Jiao Jiao and Fei Fan.

11-year-old Boy Killed 1,051-Pound Monster Hog

 1,051-Pound Monster Hog
11-year-old Alabama boy Jamison Stone used a Smith & Wesson customized .50 caliber revolver to kill a wild Feral hog that just may be the biggest pig ever found.

The monster hog weighed a 1,051 pounds and measured 10-feet-7 from the tip of its snout to the base of its tail.

Jamison shot the huge animal eight times with the pistol and chased it for three hours through hilly woods before finishing it off with a point-blank shot.

With the pig finally dead in a creek bed on the 2,500-acre Lost Creek Plantation, a commercial hunting preserve in Delta, trees had to be cut down and a backhoe brought in to bring Jamison's prize out of the woods. Link to Monsterpig | Fox

Update: The biggest monster pig was not a wild hog as claimed earlier by some medias, but a fed hog once had been raised on an Alabama farm and was sold to the Lost Creek Plantation just four days before it was shot. From Guardian

Phil Blissitt told The Anniston Star in a story Friday that he bought the 6-week-old pig in December 2004 as a Christmas gift for his wife, Rhonda, and that they sold it after deciding to get rid of all the pigs at their farm.

``I just wanted the truth to be told. That wasn't a wild pig,'' Rhonda Blissitt said.

Sony 's Film-thin Display Bends Like Paper

Sony 's Film-thin Display Bends Like Paper

In the race for ever thinner displays for TVs, cell phones and other gadgets, Sony may have developed one to beat them all - a razor-thin display that bends like paper while showing full-color video.

The display is being held up by a hand that's squeezing the 0.3 millimeter, or 0.01 inch, display, while showing color video.

The display combines Sony's organic thin film transistor, or TFT, technology, which is required to make flexible displays, with another kind of technology called organic electroluminescent display.

The latter technology is not as widespread for gadgets as the two main display technologies now on the market - liquid crystal displays and plasma display panels.

Although flat-panel TVs are getting slimmer, a display that's so thin it bends in a human hand marks a breakthrough.

Update: a demo video added.

Kid's Longer Ring Finger May Predict Higher SAT Scores

fused-fingers

To test the link to children's scores on the College Board's Scholastic Assessment Test, Mark Brosnan [of the psychology department at England's University of Bath] and his associates made photocopies of children's palms and measured the length of their index and ring fingers using calipers accurate to 0.01 millimeters. They used the finger-length ratios as a proxy for the levels of testosterone and estrogen exposure.

The researchers then looked at boys' and girls' test performances separately and compared them to finger-length ratio measurements. They found a clear link between high prenatal testosterone exposure, indicated by the longer index finger compared to the ring finger, and higher scores on the math SAT.

Similarly, they found higher literacy SAT scores for the girls among those who had lower prenatal testosterone exposure, as indicated by a shorter ring finger compared with the index finger.

The researchers also compared the finger-lengths ratios to all the children's SAT scores and found a relatively longer ring finger -- indicating greater prenatal exposure to testosterone --meant a wider gap in scores for math versus literacy (writing and critical reading).

Fire Damages 19th Century's Tea Clipper

Blaze ravages historic Cutty SarkThe Cutty Sark, a surviving 19th century tea clipper and a major London tourist attraction was seriously damaged by a (possibly deliberate) fire when undergoing a £25m or US$49million restoration.

Built in 1869 by the Scott and Linton firm in Dumbarton, western Scotland, the Cutty Sark was one of the last tea clippers to be launched.

Notable performances included 360 nautical miles in 24 hours, or an average of 15 knots, the best speed for any ship of its size, and racing back from Shanghai to London in 122 days.

As the tea trade was later taken over by steamers using the Suez Canal route, the Cutty Sark turned to general trading and transporting wool from Australia, which included one exceptional passage of 67 days.

It was put into dry dock in Greenwich in 1954. Link | An aerial image showing the extent of the damage

NASA's Spirit Rover Strongest Evidence for Watery Past on Mars

silica-rich Gertrude Weise patch

The strongest evidence yet that ancient Mars was much wetter than it is now has been unearthed by NASA's Spirit rover.

A patch of Martian soil kicked up and analyzed by Spirit appears to be rich in silica, which suggests it would have required water to produce.

This discovery came about unexpectedly as the result of a mechanical failure.

Both Spirit and its twin rover Opportunity completed their original three-month missions in April 2004, and are aging. One of Spirit's six wheels no longer rotates, gouging a deep impression as it drags through soil. That scraping has exposed several patches of bright soil, leading to some of Spirit's biggest discoveries in its Gusev Crater exploration site, including the most recent find.

One possible origin for the silica may have been interaction of soil with acid vapors produced by volcanic activity in the presence of water, though the material could also have formed in water in a hot spring environment, NASA said in a statement. The latest discovery adds compelling new evidence for ancient conditions that might have been favorable for life.

Family Feud--Missouri Identical Twin Brothers' Paternity Court Fight

Twin brothers Raymon and Richard MillerHoly Crap!

Twin brothers Raymon (L) and Richard Miller are the father and uncle to a 3-year-old little girl. The problem is, they don't know which is which. Or who is who.

The identical Missouri twins say they were unknowingly having sex with the same woman. And according to the woman's testimony, she had sex with each man on the same day. Within hours of each other.

When the woman in question, Holly Marie Adams, got pregnant, she named Raymon the father, but he contested and demanded a paternity test, bringing his own brother Richard to court.

But a paternity test in this case could not help. The test showed that both brothers have over a 99.9 percent probability of being the daddy— and neither one wants to pay the child support. The result of the test has not only brought to light the limits of DNA evidence, it has also led to a three-year legal battle, a Miller family feud and a little girl who may never know who her real father is.

Continue to read the full story at ABC, which is the most interesting thing I even saw happened to the twins.

Bryan Byrd Bellang and Benjamin Ngeteg tied for the last of eight council seats in Bontoc, a resort town some 280km (175 miles) north of Manila.

They agreed to the coin toss, set down in local election rules. Mr Bellang called heads and won the seat.

US Embassy In Iraq to Be Biggest Ever

The new US Embassy in Baghdad will be the world's largest and most expensive foreign mission, though it may not be large enough or secure enough to cope with the chaos in Iraq.

The $592 million embassy occupies a chunk of prime real estate two-thirds the size of Washington's National Mall, with desk space for about 1,000 people behind high, blast-resistant walls. The compound is a symbol both of how much the United States has invested in Iraq and how the circumstances of its involvement are changing.

The 21-building complex on the Tigris River was envisioned three years ago partly as a headquarters for the democratic expansion in the Middle East that President Bush identified as the organizing principle for foreign policy in his second term.

The embassy is one of the few major projects the administration has undertaken in Iraq that is on schedule and within budget. Still, not all has gone according to plan.

Spring Hare

Spring hareSpring hares are found locally in the semi-arid steppes and dry savannas of Kenya and Tanzania, as well as in southwestern Africa.

The peculiar springhare, which appears to be a cross between a kangaroo and a rabbit, has caused scientists much confusion. It was once grouped with jerboas (jumping rodents), then with porcupines, then with scaly-tailed squirrels, until finally it was allotted its own family. The springhare’s large back legs enable it to make gigantic leaps of 20 to 30 feet, using its long tail for balance.
